About STEA

The latest population projections and immigration trends indicate that the greatest growth is projected for Hispanics. However, the number of Hispanics who choose Engineering or Computing areas as their field of study is not comparable to the rate of Hispanic population growth. The National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering and Institute of Medicine, through their Rising Above the Gathering Storm Report, recognize the importance of fully engaging people from under-represented groups and institutions in order to maintain our nation's global leadership in engineering and computing.

The Texas Commissioner of Higher Education challenged Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi to facilitate an effort to increase the pipeline of students in South Texas prepared to enter engineering or other science, technology or math programs and successfully complete them. The South Texas Engineering Alliance (STEA) was developed with the help of various Members to provide a mechanism to unite in the pursuit of increasing the interest of K-12 students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education.
